Learning Outcome Two: Be able to integrate their ideas with those of others using summary, paraphrase, quotation, analysis, and synthesis of relevant sources.

Introduction:

The following is an example of an annotated bibliography. In the 3rd entry, you will find a claim I made in my research paper in red and the research I used to support it in blue.

Sixty-eight primarily rural adolescents participated as teen leaders in a sexuality education program and completed assessments of social responsibility and community belonging before and after program participation. Psychological engagement with the service activity and number of hours spent were used to predict changes in social responsibility and community belonging

This study shows that teens who participate in community service are more likely to do better in school, have better social interactions, as well as staying away from risky behaviors. Teens from more advantaged backgrounds were also more willing to give their time.

This study of 4,057 students from 52 high schools in Chicago finds that a set of specific kinds of civic learning opportunities fosters notable improvements in students’ commitment to civic participation. Discussing civic and political issues with one’s parents, extracurricular activities other than sports, and living in a civically responsive neighborhood also appear to meaningfully support this goal. Other school characteristics appear less influential.

In solution one of my research paper, I discussed why reworking community service into a more positive view could help teens better understand the benefits of community service. I used this article because I felt as though it nicely displayed many forms of civic engagement and that the study did show that those who participated in their community saw notable improvements in their communication and engagement skills, in and out of the classroom.

Kahne and Sporte (2008) conducted a study showing “high school students demonstrate that students who report having particular experiences (debating issues in class, being taught civic skills, undertaking service learning) are more likely to also report being committed to involved in various forms of civic and political engagement” (p. 4). 

I chose to embed this quote into my paper because I felt as though it nicely displayed many forms of civic engagement and that the study did show that those who participated in their community saw notable improvements in their communication and engagement skills, in and out of the classroom.
